The Wavell School

Wavell World Book Day 2023

Wavell celebrated World Book Day in style this year on 28th February 2023. Our theme was Myths, Legends and Fairy Tales and staff dressed accordingly!  We had a fantastic range of costumes, right across the school, worn all through the teaching day.  The coveted Fancy Dress Team Prize went to PE, for their Cinderella theme (Mr Mills’ outfit was a stunner); Ms Rowley created two new Couples Prizes – winners were Mr Denton and Miss Woodward as Shrek and Fiona, Mrs Troy and Miss Young both as Maleficent.  Mrs Gowers won the Individual Prize for her fantastic grandma/wolf.

The day started with an assembly for Years 7 – 10, when we announced the winners of the Wavell Writing Competition, for which we had a record number of entries this year.  You can read the winning entries below.

Our assembly also featured music from the Choir, plus individual performances from Alexia in Year 10 and Lucas in Year 10 on the piano.  Our Poetry by Heart winner, Natania in Year 9, gave a fabulous performance of 'A Century Later 'by Imtiaz Dharker, and we celebrated the contributions of the Year 10 Literacy Leaders and our Reading Buddy Mentors.  Mrs Parkin announced the winners of the KS3 Art Competition – you can see them all here:

Throughout the day, students enjoyed Stop and Read for the last ten minutes of lessons, and there was a range of activities in the Library at break and lunchtime.  Meanwhile, students were busy filling out their Who’s Who competition entries, identifying which characters staff were dressed up as.  Well done to Taya in Year 8 and Anna in Year 11 for spotting the most characters.

It was lovely to have the whole school coming together for such an enjoyable occasion to celebrate the joys of story, poetry, music and art.
