The Wavell School

Victory for the U13 Girls!

Having been inspired by Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler & Jofra Archer last Sunday, The Wavell School’s U13 Girls Cricket team produced a dramatic cup final of their own on Wednesday 17th July 2019!

The hosts batted first and were reduced to a low, but defendable, total after some excellent bowling and fielding from their Weydon School counterparts. Having only lost three wickets, the girls were reasonably pleased with their total but knew they could have scored a few more and would have to bowl well to come away with the victory.

Weydon began their chase slowly but started to take control in the middle overs. Some powerful hitting and quick running between the wickets meant Wavell were on the back foot heading into the final overs of the game. The final six deliveries were to be bowled by Mimi, who knew she couldn’t afford to give more than five runs away. It had come down to the equivalent of a super over, just like it had on Sunday at Lords.

With two runs scored in the first two balls, the odds were against the home team but the next dot ball was followed by a miracle! Three wickets in the final three balls- the perfect hat trick- sealed victory for the The Wavell and saw them crowned u13 District Cup Champions for 2019.

Director of PE, Rich Panons, was delighted with their efforts;

The girls have been superb this year and we’re incredibly proud of them. The team- lead by Miss Harris- have continued to develop with each game and the work we’ve done with Malcolm Kerry and the Chance 2 Shine programme is really flourishing at the moment. Girls Cricket in particular is as healthy as ever and we can’t wait for next summer already!
