The Wavell School

Rewarding Return of Rugby!

On 31st March 2022 10 Year 7 & 8 boys represented the School in our first competitive rugby fixture in 2 years. The Tournament was hosted by Farnham Rugby Club and for 7 of the boys it was their first competitive rugby, not only for the school, but EVER!

The team played 4 games, we won 2, drew 1, lost 1.

Our first game against Farnham Heath End was the perfect start. Big hits, strong carries and outstanding teamwork and communication meant we scored 3 tries, one of which was a fantastic solo effort from Rufus Wilkinson, a charging run which started in our own half. The next two games were toughly fought against the All Hallows A and B teams. Our team showed brilliant fight to come back to draw 2-2 after conceding 2 early tries. The boys were beginning to tire after working so hard in the first two and unfortunately we ran out of time to pull the score back meaning we lost the third game.

Despite this, we were still in the running to win some shiny silverware so the boys reset themselves for the fourth and final game wanting to be their best, and they certainly were. Outstanding offloads in attack and pressure in defence meant we were just too good for a solid FHES team. Jack Purcell’s try in the final game was an outstanding demonstration of support in attack and his try meant Wavell won the final game and  ‘The Kennedy Bowl Trophy’!

The afternoon was a fantastic display of rugby which left Mr Panons and Miss Trodd very proud and excited for the future of Rugby success for all Wavell rugby teams, boys and girls.
