Performances receive rapturous applause

On Thursday and Friday 29th and 30th January, the Wavell company of actors came together to present their Shakespeare Schools Festival performances of 'The Taming of the Shrew' and 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. The company performed for the first time over 2 nights in the transformed School Hall. This in itself requires fantastic praise because the actors' only use of the hall with set and lights was their first performance!

The Taming of the ShrewBoth productions were very 'physical' in style and the company's commitment to their performances and each other is to be admired. Even the actors without a speaking part were totally committed to their role and should also be commended for this. Bringing the 16th century language to life is a difficult task and all the characters performed with energy and clarity to achieve this. Most importantly the company were able to make the stories accessible to today's audience and use comedy to great effect.

Each performance ran vey smoothly, which is mostly down to the Student Company Managers, Martha Hamlin for 'The Taming of the Shrew' and Finn Thorton, 'A Midsummer Night's Dream'. These roles are crucial to the success of our performances and because each of the 4 performances over the 2 nights went without a hitch, Martha and Finn should receive the accolades for this!

A Midsummer Night's DreamAs for the backstage crew, a very special mention should go to Zoe Evans and Jojo Naeem. Two students who volunteered to operate the lighting and did a fantastic job. They only used the lighting desk for 5 days before the public performances and even then, not all the lights were rigged until the day of the show. Well done and thank you girls!

The audience left the 'auditorium' on both nights having been 'thoroughly entertained'. Other reviews included,

'I was amazed at the high standard of acting'

'I've been to see lots of theatre but this is better than the professionals'

'I never thought I'd say this but I laughed at Shakespeare and really enjoyed myself'

'I don't often do this, but l laughed out loud!'

'I hate Shakespeare but this was amazing'.

Well done the Wavell Company of 2014/15
