Ignis too hot to handle at Sports Day... just!

With the closest Sports Day results we've ever had, Ignis claimed the Title for 2023 by a mere 3 points!

A minimum of 4 points was available for finishing last in a field event, and 6 points for finishing last in a track race, so the difference really was one extra person participating for their House. The final score of 2,310 points to 2,313 was so close that we had to go back and recount every event twice more just in case. Don’t worry though; the scorers were 100% accurate!

Athletics was delivered in all double PE lessons this half term across Years 7 to 10, and the students have clearly been taking notes, as the morning session saw a string of fine performances. Year 7 Triple Jump took centre stage early on with Ashwin T breaking the School Record of 8.78 metres, by a good 20cms, only for his friend Shayan L to step up immediately after him and smash that new record by recording 9.37 metres! An outstanding effort by both boys to beat A.Brook’s 2001 School Best.

Sports Day 2023

27th June 2023

On the track, Darcey L Y8 broke the girls 300m record with a time of 48.18 seconds- beating K.Laws-Bates’ 2011 time by almost 2 seconds. Stunning! The morning session concluded and the sprint races were about to begin….

Notable performances from Sujan G Y7, Lily S Y9 & Luke W Y10 had already excited the crowd before the relay races kicked off. The opening race featured the Year 7 girls who most certainly set the tone for the remaining half an hour. The Mistral girls ran a time of 1 minute and 0.43 seconds, beating a record that had stood since before the turn of the century! The previous 1999 record was held by the Spartans Team, back in the day of a three house system. A handful of current staff are mature enough to remember those days!

Director of PE, Mr Panons, would like to thank the Wavell staff for their efforts in helping to run another successful Sports Day this year and congratulate every student who took part for their House. In the case of Ignis, you really DID make a difference.
