Gremlin Dance Challenge 2024

Wavell had another successful year at the Gremlin Dance Challenge on Thursday 14th March 2024 scooping a handful of awards across all 3 of our entries! Despite some last-minute costume drama, and one of the team being poorly and unable to perform the team pulled together and gave it their all.

This year the theme was to produce a dance based on a piece of art.

Our first entry was ‘The Swan’s Message’, an inspiration from Raja Ravi Varma's painting where messages of love were carried to and fro by the swans.  Choreographed by Mrs Mamun, this was comprised of entirely Year 7 students and their graceful kathak fusion dance was awarded 3rd place in the KS3 category. Miss Cossburn and Mrs Wright, who were in the audience were beyond excited!

Next was ‘Beneath the Cascade’, inspired by The Singing Butler, painted by Jack Vettriano, and explored the romance shielded by an ongoing downpour. The Year 8 & 9 students were superbly led by the Year 11 prefects who worked brilliantly as a team to choreograph and rehearse this dance. Their hard work paid off as it resulted in them being awarded 1st place in the KS3 category, along with Most Entertaining Performance AND Best Overall Performance. Nice work girls!

Our final, KS4 entry ‘Flow’ was based on Hokusai’s The Great Wave, and explored the beauty and power of the sea. The Year 10 and 11 students danced beautifully to create constant, rippling movement and were awarded 2nd place and 'Most Entertaining Performance' in the KS4 category. Well done girls!

Thank you to Mrs Mamun, Mr Melling and Mr Clifford-Franklin for their invaluable support, calmness and humour on the night, and to all of you who came to support us – we hope you had a fantastic evening!

Most of all though, huge congratulations and thank you to all the wonderful dancers - your awards were well-deserved and we are all exceptionally proud of you!
