Aqua Retain Sports Day Title For a Second Year
With over 750 students from Years 7 - 10 competing in the 2019 Wavell School Sports Day on Friday 5th July 2019, the Mistral, Terra and Ignis Houses were unable to stem the tide and prevent Aqua claiming back-to-back victories.
Drenched in glorious sunshine for a second consecutive year, the Garrison Military Stadium was the perfect back-drop for our students to showcase their considerable athletic talents.
The morning session consisted of field events and long distance track races, with the following athletes breaking long-standing School Records;
Alysha Mead (Year 8) 1,500m - 4m’53
Molly Brooke (Year 9) Javelin - 22.81m
Ellie Head (Year 10) Long Jump - 4.50m
Dan Hicks (Year 10) High Jump - 1.73m
Chloe Armsworth (Year 10) High Jump - 1.55m
The afternoon session began after a short break and consisted of Hurdles races, Short Track Finals and the eagerly anticipated 4x100m Relays, all of which counted towards the final House totals. Both Ellie and Dan broke a second School Record, this time on the track, as well as the 4x100m Mistral Relay Team;
Ellie Head (Year 10) 100m - 13.07
Dan Hicks (Year 10) 400m - 57.31
Mistral Boys (Year 10) 4x100m Relay – 49.63
Our new awards- for best track performance and best field performance- went to the following students;
Ellie Head, for breaking the original School Long Jump Record with all three of her jumps!
Alysha Mead, for taking an incredible 12 seconds off of the girls' 1,500m Record. Outstanding!
We were once again delighted to welcome a team of military personnel who assisted with the running of the day, thanks to our Chair of Governors Cpt. Jason Murdoch.
Director of PE, Mr Panons, had the following to say;
Sports Day wouldn’t happen without the support of every member of staff. Whether they are hands-on and run an event for us, accompany the students to and from the stadium and sit with them in the stand or assist with things like administration tasks, first aid or toilet duties, they are all fantastic in their own way. The students were brilliant and some of the performances- particularly those that broke long-standing School Records- were incredible! I am extremely proud of everyone who was involved on Friday.
