Reading Buddies

Our Reading Buddy programme offers a chance for Year 7 and EAL students to catch-up on their reading skills.

Once a week – on Tuesdays in the LRC –  Year 9 peer mentors listen to the younger students read, discuss their books with them and help them choose new texts.  The scheme provides a selection of appropriate fiction and non-fiction, specially chosen to interest this age group but at the same time build and consolidate reading skills.

There are refreshments on offer for those who arrive early and rewards for regular attendance.  Last year’s group of Year 7 students made, on average, double the expected rate of progress in their reading skills.  Our friendly, responsible Year 9s provide excellent role models and the programme fosters good relationships between the year groups.

We have recently introduced a further two sessions on Wednesdays and Thursdays in the LRC, with a group of students that have English as their second language and need intervention with their reading. The two groups run by buddying an EAL student with a suitable role model who is an able reader from the same form.
