The Wavell School

Climate and Sustainability Strategy

Our commitment to environmental sustainability reflects The Wavell’s values of respect, preparation, commitment and accountability. It also supports our vision of developing young people to make a positive contribution to society to be equipped to meet the challenges of the 21st Century.

Wavell aims to embrace and celebrate diversity by creating Global Citizens who are passionate about sustainability and who are committed to making positive environmental impacts.

The vision for the Wavell Climate and Sustainability strategy is to implement the cultural and operational change across the Wavell school to ensure:

  1. Climate Education: Students leave the Wavell understanding the challenges of climate change and their responsibility as global citizens to live sustainably through learning opportunities and practical experience. Wavell students will improve year on year in the Nationally of Climate Literacy Survey with a goal to be above average Nationally. This will be achieved through curriculum education with Science, Geography and Design and Technology identified by the recent Curriculum Review as having curriculum related to climate change and sustainability. We will exploit the potential for other subjects to embed nature, climate and sustainability into curriculum to foster a passion of the environment.
  2. Decarbonisation: The school will strive for Net Zero. Specifically, the school will strive to meet the government targets of reducing carbon emissions by more than 50% by 2032 and 75% by 2037. (against the stated 2017 baseline) recognising the significant contribution of HCC and their C&S strategy in meeting these targets.
  3. Resilience: That the site is made resilient for extreme weather events and that a high-quality learning environment is maintained with no loss of curriculum time. We will make the school resilient to prepare for the potential effects of climate change by adapting the school site and mitigating potential risks of more extreme weather. In particular we will plan for more extreme temperatures, flooding and drought. Resilience planning recognises the significant effect of offsite mitigation strategies (particularly for flooding) and contribution of Rushmoor DC and their C&S strategy in meeting these targets.
  4. Biodiversity and Nature: Biodiversity on the school site will be increased by 50% from a 2025 baseline by 2030. We will adapt the way the school site is managed to exploit the value of the site to increase biodiversity, leveraging this opportunity to support the school inclusion strategy, to connect students with nature and to support resilience.

Current Student ECO Clubs

Y8 ECO Club - Wednesday Lunchtimes A2.2

Year 8s have created their own environment project looking at sustainability and recycling.  They have created subject specific recycling logos for all of the classroom bins and are checking teacher classrooms to see that recycling bins are being used and that lights / projectors are being turned off at break / lunch and afterschool.  The students are currently looking at what their next sustainability initiative will be!

Y9 ECO Club - Tuesday Lunchtimes A2.2

Year 9s are creating their own environment project looking at increasing the biodiversity across the school site.  They have created an ambition to increase the number of bees (hopefully to get to the point we can have a bee hive!). They are looking at how they can achieve this by making changes to the school grounds including when to cut hedges and shrubs to maximise the poential for bees, where to  adding flowers, and what areas can be meadowed.
