Youth Speaks 2016

On the 19th January this year, two Wavell Teams competed in the district round of the Rotary Youth Speaks competition in the Council Offices in Farnborough.

The first team up was our Year 8 Intermediate Team (Carys Hoggan, Bethan Hoggan and Michael Watts) who spoke emphatically about the 21st Century teenager – The World on Our Shoulders (school, internet and mental health issues).

Next up was our Senior Team (Jude Cowden, Geraint Hoggan and Mollie Yates) who discussed the topical subject of ‘Free Speech’ and compared it to mindless chatter and hate speech, which is so prevalent today, especially online.

Unfortunately, both teams were unsuccessful this time around, although Geraint again received a commendation from the judges for his well-researched and delivered  speech. Well done!

The overall Intermediate winners were Hawley Place, who discussed ‘The Pursuit of Individuality’. At Senior level, the winners were St. Nicolas’ School who spoke about ‘Fashion and Body Image’.

To prepare, learn and present a 10 minute team speech on a topic relevant to young people is no easy feat and deserves huge recognition and admiration. As first time performers, I would like to personally congratulate Michael Watts and Jude Cowden on great presentations.

Well done 'Youth Speakers' – very proud of you all - see you (and some 'newbies') next year!

Youth Speaks will begin again in September 2016.
