Year 11 PE students experience

Paralympic Goalball

Last week saw two groups of Year 11 students do battle in the Sports Hall… in blindfolds!

A sport that was devised to help rehabilitate war veterans, Goalball is played by visually impaired athletes, who use blackout masks to ensure equality. Part of the Games since Toronto 1976, in Rio Lithuania claimed Gold with a 14-8 victory over a much fancied United States of America team.

The Year 11 students enjoyed putting their hearing to the test, as the match ball contains two bells which allow the participants to hear it and track its progress; before diving full length to stop it flying into their goal!

With the cold weather about to set in, more Paralympic sports will be tried and tested in the Sports Hall over the coming term.
