We Care to Challenge

Year 10 Biotechnology Programme

This year 12 Year 10 students who are taking Design and Technology GCSE were selected to be part of the Eluceo Biotechnology Programme and AQA Unit Award Scheme in Problem-Solving.

The challenge was set by a real Biotechnology Company, Green Biologics Ltd to theoretically design an ice-cream that smelt like one thing but tastes like another.

Students really enjoyed the program and learning and researching about micro-organisms and esters to create their ice-cream, Eluceo came in to work with students over a period of 6 weeks.

The program culminated in an exciting trip to Green Biologics LTD to meet the scientists and present their ice cream ideas to the company. Students then partook in a tour of the laboratories and a discussion about STEM (Science, Technology, Enginnering, Maths) careers.

Students have gained an acreddited award for AQA in Problem-Solving for their work on this program, and were invited to Calthorpe Park School to be awarded their certificates by the Chairman of Hart District Council Councillor Wendy Makepeace-Browne.

This has been a really exciting opportunity for our students to partake in this program, they have worked incredibly well and have been an asset to the Wavell School. This challenge also provided students with a real-life brief to work from and enabled them to meet professionals from a range of STEM companies.
