Literacy Day 2016

On March 3rd we celebrated World Book Day with another amazing Literacy Day at the Wavell.

Over 60 members of staff dressed up, with costumes ranging from the Big Bad Wolf (from Grimm’s Tales) to Cruella de Ville and a selection of different countries (the Atlas).  We even had a squid (“Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea) – a brave costume from Mrs Peters!  First prize went to the Science team, whose Mutant Ninja Turtles costumes were stunning.  Arts took second prize with their Sherlock Holmes theme, including a murder victim with hatchet lodged in her skull (Miss McKie). Design Technology came a close third with their gorgeous cat outfits illustrating “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats”.  The individual prize went to Mrs Francis for her amazing Statue of Liberty, representing the America pages in the world atlas; she even completed lunch duty in the playground in her costume!

Students enjoyed the Literary Quiz, won by Mr Squire’s Year 8 form for Key Stage 3 and Mrs Millard’s Year 11s in Key Stage 4.  The individual Staff Who’s Who competition was hotly contested, with Harvey Cutler in Year 8 coming tops and earning himself a WH Smiths voucher.

Throughout the day there were a variety of activities on offer, with games and competitions during break and lunch in the Library, a mobile library stall in the canteen (thanks to Georgiana McKeand-Halliday for helping out)  and Stop and Read – 10 minutes quiet reading three times in the day for everyone in the school, staff and students alike. Some fantastic book cover artwork was produced by Year 9.

Our thanks go to all the staff who took part.  The effort that went into the fancy dress costumes was outstanding, making it an exciting and, at times, surreal day.
